Grassroots Grounding

In November 1983, while living in Washington, DC., Gilberto R. Gerald (Gil Gerald), took a first leap of faith and left the field of architecture after ten years in that profession. While initially intending to return to the practice of architecture after two years, he began a journey in non-profit work to support the advancement of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities, and to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Black community. That journey included serving as the Washington, DC-based executive director of a national LGBT organization, serving as a senior manager of a national AIDS organization, and later as the executive director of a community-based AIDS services organization in Los Angeles.

These experiences led to Gil Gerald’s professional development in advocacy and in non-profit management, governance, program planning, collaboration, and fundraising/development.  In late 1990, while living in Los Angeles, Gil Gerald took a second leap of faith and began offering consulting services to continue his commitment to supporting and building community-based responses to social problems, especially challenges faced by marginalized groups and communities.  In March 1993, Gil Gerald incorporated the business with investment support from family and friends.
